Ask An Indie ~ Meet the Indie Authors

It’s taken me several weeks to compile, but today I am ready to debut, Ask an Indie. I have chosen to interview both successful indie authors and beginning indie authors. Why? Because I truly believe self publishing is the wave of the future, and I want to ride that wave! I came up with a few questions and got honest responses from 30 self-published authors.

There are fourteen questions in all ~ I’ll post one or two of them every few days. Today, we will meet the authors as they answer question one:

How many books do you have published, and are they all self-published? What are the titles and where can we purchase them? Please give link(s).

1. Sherry Ficklin

Sherry is a full time writer from Colorado where she lives with her husband, four kids, two dogs, and a fluctuating number of chickens and house guests. A former military brat, she loves to travel and meet new people. She can often be found browsing her local bookstore with a large white hot chocolate in one hand and a towering stack of books in the other. That is, unless she’s on deadline at which time she, like the Loch Ness monster, is often only seen in blurry photographs.

She is the author of The Gods of Fate Trilogy. Book 1, Foresight, book 2, Second Sight, and Book 3, Hindsight, are now available. She is also the author of the adult paranormal novels, The Palmetto Moon series. Book 1, Born of Blood and book 2, Grave Secrets are now available.

Her newest YA steampunk novel, EXTRACTED: The Lost Imperials book 1, co-written with Tyler H. Jolley is under contract with Spencer Hill Press. Book 1, EXTRACTED, is due for release 11.12.13. It is now available for pre-order.

You can see more about Sherry and her books at her official website, www.sherryficklin.com

I currently have 7 titles published (more under contract) but only 4 are currently on sale. My Gods of Fate trilogy is published with a small POD press, my adult paranormal detective series Palmetto Moon is under contract with a small e-book only publisher (but is currently off sale for re-branding and new covers) my self published YA Mystery just got picked up by Harlequin and will be released next year. My newest series, The Lost Imperials, is under contract with a mid-list publisher who has been amazing. You can find all my available books here:

2. Marsha Ward

Marsha Ward is an award-winning freelance writer and editor who has published over 900 articles, columns, poems and short stories, as well as four novels. She was born in the sleepy little town of Phoenix, Arizona, and grew up with chickens, citrus trees, and lots of room to roam. Marsha began telling stories at a very early age, regaling her neighborhood chums with her tales over homemade sugar cookies. She works with other writers as a mentor, creative consultant, editor, workshop presenter, contest judge, coach, and teacher. In 1986 she founded American Night Writers Association, Inc. (also know as ANWA), a network for women writers of the LDS faith. After fifty+ years in the city, Marsha now makes her home in a tiny hamlet under Central Arizona’s magnificent Mogollon Rim. When she is not writing, she loves to spoil her grandchildren, travel, give talks, meet readers, and sign books.

5. Jaleta Clegg

Jaleta Clegg loves science fiction adventure stories. Since she discovered a shortage at her local library, she’s been on a mission to rectify the situation by writing her own stories. Besides science fiction, she also dabbles in silly horror, fantasy, and even the odd bit of romance. When not writing, she can be found enjoying bad monster movies, crocheting strange things like beard hats or cuddly cthulhus, or cooking up bizarre dishes for her family horde. She lives in Utah with too many animals and children, and a very patient husband.

11. George Snyder ~ Award Winning Crime Novelist

George started by publishing short stories in men’s magazines; one to Alfred Hitchcock’s Mystery Magazine. First novel, ‘The Surfer Killers’ published as ‘Surfside Sex’ by Playtime Books (part of Neva Paperbacks) in early sixties. With Merit and Award books and through promoter Lyle Kenyon Engel, he wrote seven Nick Carter spy/adventure screw and kill books. One book, ‘The Defector’ went into three printings and was translated into French and Japanese. And as Patrick Morgan, he wrote ten spy/thrillers in the Operation Hang Ten series with titles like, ‘Hang Dead Hawaiian Style’(translated into French and Japanese), ‘Cute and Deadly Surf Twins’, ‘Deadly Group Down Under’ ‘Too Many Murders’ etc. As Ray Stanley, he wrote ‘The Mini Cult Murders,’ loosely based on Charles Manson.

Breaking loose on his own in the late seventies, he wrote a sci-fi Romance ‘Beyond Gender Wars,’ eventually published as eBook by Extasy Publishing in 2010. He self-published three books in Baylor Rumble series, ‘Bad Girl Dead,’ ‘Bleeding Sisters,’ ‘Catalina Killers,’ as well as non-fiction book, ‘Making it on Social Security’ and two memoirs; ‘The $900 Honda’ and ‘Roar and Thunder.’ In 2011, he connected with BooksForABuck Publishing that published ‘Satin Shorts,’ and 2012 ‘The Crossfire Diamonds.’ Also in 2012 he received an award from the Southwestern Writers Conference, Albuquerque in the mystery/detective/thriller category for his crime novel, ‘The Farewell Heist,’ published by BooksForABuck in July 2013. Solstice Publishing brought out the eBook of #4 in the Baylor Rumble crime novel series, ‘Baja Bullets’ and in 2013 the printed version.

In 2013 he launched his new, Logan Sand hardboiled crime series. The first two novels, ‘The Calcutta Dragon’ and ‘Plundered Angels’ are complete. He began the first Makayla Tuff, new kick-ass gal Private Eye series, ‘Bad Men, Worse Women.’  In August, he was interviewed by Joyce Strand for Twitter on Strand’s Simply Tips.

And in May, 2013, George signed a contract with television media production company Villavision for a 24 month film option on ‘Baja Bullets.’

1. How many books do you have published, and are they all self-published?

More than 30 published books, novels, non-fiction, memoirs. Twelve are still available through Amazon and all those other places. Six were self-published.

12.  Shirley Bahlmann

Shirley Anderson Bahlmann grew up in Haddon Heights, New Jersey where she frequently hid in the closet to read books so she wouldn’t be put to work. She soon turned her fertile imagination to writing and produced a 25-page novel at the age of ten.

She moved to Utah when she was twelve, where she played saxophone in high school and college, and served as editor of the high school “Write” magazine, and the college newspaper, “The Snowdrift.”

Married to Bob Bahlmann since 1978, Shirley finally got past the fear of rejection and saw her first book, a collection of true pioneer stories, published in 2001, when the oldest of their six sons was married and their youngest was just two years old. To date, she has had part in the publication of over 20 books, from novels to historical fiction to biography to how-to and how-not-to.

Shirley sees life as a great adventure. Believing that whether you worry or not, things always work out, she’s pretty much quit worrying.

14. Greg Lovvorn

1.      How many books do you have published, and are they all self-published? What are the titles and where can we purchase them? Please give link(s).

To date I have published two books. Both of them are Indies published through Amazon’s KDP and Creatspace programs.

My first book was “Write and GET PAID!”  http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DWTXG8Y  was written because I wanted to tell my story and use it to guide and show people it is possible to make a living as a writer even if you have not been formally trained as one.

After its release I was talking to a friend who kept telling me he would love to follow my lead but he couldn’t write like I do. This gentleman is very well spoken. He works teaching English as a second language and is, in my opinion an excellent communicator. He just lacked confidence and a few basic skills. That is where the inspiration for my second book “You can write” http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00ENUKDDW  came from.

Finally, I’ve published Part 1 of The Projectionist, a serial novel that I’m also publishing a chapter at a time on my blog.

20. Lauren Ritz

Lauren Ritz started writing at the age of six with a journal entry about an alien flying through her bedroom window and landing on her wall. She would have started earlier, but she was handicapped by the fact that she couldn’t draw well enough.

After years of dabbling in this and that (making a living on the side) Lauren decided to settle down to writing full time. Without A Voice is her first novella.

You can find Lauren online, or in her garden.

25. Merita King

Merita King has loved the science fiction and fantasy genre in both books and movies since she was a young child.  She has been greatly inspired by years of watching movies and reading books and has wanted to make a contribution to this genre for many years.  Her stories all contain a strong spiritual thread as she believes that spirituality is universal and crosses all boundaries.  She believes that the creative process is largely intuitive and can be very effectively blocked by too much pre-planning.  “Plot lines, characters and events all come to me intuitively,” she says, “and this makes the act of writing a constant pleasure.”  She lives alone in Hampshire, UK.

27. Heather McCoubrey

Heather McCoubrey is an indie author who self published her debut novel, To Love Twice in March 2013. As a child, she and her family moved around quite a bit due to her father’s work in construction. Always the new kid, she turned to books to escape. In middle school, she was blessed with a teacher who taught her that she could write her own stories just as easily as she could read them. A career was born. She currently lives in Western Pennsylvania with her husband and children, hard at work on her second novel, due out Summer 2014.
